Delmarva Chorus

The Delmarva Chorus was chartered as a Chapter of Sweet Adelines International in September of 2003. They started out as the Delmarva Womens' Barbershop Chorus in 2001 when Carol Ludwig, Barb Preece and Peggy Rogers, all Ocean Pines residents, who knew each other from their membership to Sweet Adelines and missed the choruses they left behind in PA, NJ and MD. They got together with a plan to start a local chorus. Meetings were held, they publicized their plans with the support of local newspapers and the Ocean Pines Community, and Carol's pontoon boat was decorated and entered the Annual Boat Parade announcing their first open house on August 20, 2001. The first song they chose to teach to attendees was "This Is My Country" a song that became very appropriate since their first official performance was on October 12, 2001, in Whitehorse Park, for a 9-11 Memorial Service. The chorus quickly became aware of the benefits of belonging to a group of women who are dedicated to community service, friendship and camaraderie as one of the new members lost her son in the Twin Towers.

After meeting the requirements for membership in Sweet Adelines International, which includes having a minimum of twenty members, the ability to do a fifteen minute quality performance of barbershop style songs and having chapter governance and officers in place, the Delmarva Chorus received its charter with twenty-six members and chose a team management style of governance.

We currently have twenty-three members from Ocean Pines, Ocean City, Berlin, MD, and Sussex County, DE. We raise funds for chorus expenses and to make donations to organizations such as the American Breast Cancer Society, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the ALS Foundation. The chorus proudly donated and erected the flagpole and the American flag at the Ocean Pines Community Center and sponsored the "Chorus of Singing Angels Light Display" for the first OPA Festival of Lights in 2013. Regular volunteer performances are gladly given at Gull Creek, Berlin Nursing and Rehab Center, Worcester MAC Centers and Worcester County Veterans Memorial at Ocean Pines. We also support our fellow non-profit community service organizations by providing entertainment for their special events for free or for a very minimal donation.

We meet weekly on Monday evenings from 7pm-9pm at the Ocean Pines Community Center.

Performance

The main purpose of Delmarva Chorusis to get out and sing for our community. We sing at annual shows, a number of community events and at an annual competition. We also perform Singing Telegrams around Valentines Day and Mother's Day. We are available to sing at your next function or event. If you're looking for a unique musical experience to liven up your event, please check out our Hire Us section.

Education

In addition to sharing our music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of acapella singing. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals and a very important component of the chorus experience.  A couple of times a year, we will get coaching from a visiting master in the art of barbershop, where we learn many fabulous tricks of the trade.

Competition

In the spring of every year, Delmarva Chorus participates in our Region's chorus competition in Ocean City, MD. Competitions are a special time for quartets and choruses from our region to come together to sing for each other and get some constructive feedback from a panel of judges. The winners of the regional competition in both quartet and chorus categories get to travel to International Competition, which is held in the fall in a city selected each year. In 2014, International Competition will be held in Baltimore. Click here to learn more.
